Miatta Fahnbulleh, the UK’s Minister for Energy Consumers, announced the Government’s commitment to enhancing energy efficiency through an “area-based” approach at the Housing Community Summit in Liverpool. Instead of overhauling existing retrofit policies from the Conservative government, the Labour administration will build on programs like the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, the Home Upgrade Grant, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. With an additional £6.6 billion allocated for retrofit initiatives, the government aims to upgrade five million homes, particularly prioritising social housing to support those most in need. Fahnbulleh emphasised the importance of collaboration with housing associations, councils, and mayors to ensure effective delivery of these improvements. She also reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing minimum energy efficiency standards in the private rental sector by 2030. The plan includes offering grants and low-interest loans for home insulation and low-carbon heating solutions, aiming to create warmer homes with reduced running costs. Fahnbulleh expressed a strong dedication to merging social housing initiatives with decarbonisation efforts, highlighting this as a generational opportunity for significant impact.
