The UK government has confirmed that by 2030, landlords will be required to ensure their properties achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of Band C. This policy, confirmed by Miatta Fahnbulleh from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), aims to enhance the energy efficiency of rental properties across the country. To achieve this goal, the government will work closely with social housing providers and local councils through the Warm Homes Plan.
The Warm Homes Plan will focus on implementing “green upgrades,” including improved insulation and the installation of low-carbon heating systems. The DESNZ has outlined that the plan will support significant investment in these areas to upgrade millions of homes over the course of this parliament.
The National Housing Federation has welcomed the new target but emphasised the need for increased funding to meet it, particularly advocating for an additional £2 billion per year to support retrofitting efforts.
Currently, privately rented properties must have an EPC rating of E or higher. The previous government’s target for all properties to reach Band C by 2028 was overturned earlier this year.
