The Government has confirmed that its upcoming Future Homes Standard (FHS) will require solar panels on all new build homes, including social housing, by 2027. This comes after industry concerns that solar might be excluded from the final policy. The new regulations, aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, will apply across all housing tenures. The added cost is estimated at £3,300–£4,000 per home, depending on size. While full technical details are pending, the move has been welcomed by local councils and housing associations as a step toward lower energy bills and climate resilience. However, they urge the government to provide adequate funding and powers to support local implementation.
